It’s easy being green, if you’re Adam Lowry or Eric Ryan.
These two guys are the masterminds behind the eco-friendly cleaning company Method, combined their talents to create stylish yet effective home-care products.
From the minimalist packaging, to the absence of harsh cleaning ingredients to the affordable price tag, Method has everything you could want in a cleaning product. Method Product Aesthetics and Philosophy
Part of what makes Method so successful is their hip design. “What the style element does,” Lowry said, “is it creates mass market relevance for a green product.” Clearly, it’s been working, as one of the things that sets the company apart is its modern aesthetic that looks good in any bathroom or kitchen.
“We’re not the first company to say cleaners should be green,” said Lowry, “but we are doing them in a way that makes them accessible from a price-point standpoint and from a design standpoint to everyone else who isn’t sort of tree-hugging granola.”
Instead of settling for a drab look, the two made sure that their products would look appealing and be fun to use. “It’s challenging, though,” said Ryan, “because a lot of things that are very stylish really are not very good for the environment.”
Method Cleaners: Being Mainstream Green and Squeaky Green
Selling Method in mainstream mega-chains such as Target is a welcome change from many other manufacturers that sell to more “green” stores like Whole Foods. “You need to create change where the change is needed — and that is with people who are unaware of the fact that we have these issues,” explained Lowry. Ryan added, “We didn’t want to go try to steal share from the other natural cleaners, we wanted to go where there were no natural cleaners at that time.”
Lowry and Ryan’s new book, Squeaky Green, focuses on the ways in which the cleaning-product industry is actually quite dirty.
They also make sure to point out some of the more obvious contradictions with cleaning. “You never stop to think about it… [Like] the idea that you clean your tub with toxic cleaner, but then you soak in it afterward,” said Ryan.
