Green Autos: Forbes Lists Top Eco Luxury Automobiles

Forbes Auto came up with a list of both luxury and non-luxury vehicles that emit the least pollutants in the atmosphere. Each model is based on their Air Pollution Score and Carbon Footprint rating, using EPA standards.
On the list of luxury vehicles, three Lexus hybrids were at the top: the GS 450h sedan, the RX 400h SUV and LS 600h L sedan are all green auto winners.
How Lexus Is Getting Greener
Though the LS is an unlikely candidate, with a V8 engine and electric-motor powertrain, most Lexus Lexus buyers want to reduce emissions without sacrificing performance or comfort. The LS is also the most expensive hybrid currently on the market and one of the only hybrid offerings for luxury vehicles and emits 70 percent fewer pollutants than its gas-only counterpart, the LS 460 sedan.
If you prefer a different auto manufacturer, don’t worry. Audi, Cadillac, Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Porsche will be joining Lexus as automakers with luxury hybrids as soon as 2009.
Cars with four and five-cylinder engines came in next with luxury vehicles that pollute less. The Audi TT, the Volvo S40 and the BMW 128i are all on the list.
Who Else Is on the Eco-Friendly Auto List?
The Porsche Boxster and Cayman, the BMW Z4 3.0si and the Infiniti G37 Coupe are sports cars that all fit the bill as well.
J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Avoider Study showed that the environment did not really factor into consumer’s choices for choosing a certain model. However, with the expected increase in eco-friendly automobiles, more consumers will be buying hybrids in the future. J.D. Power projects 1 million hybrids will be on the road by 2012, with over 80 models ranging from sedans to trucks and SUVs.
