Make this year’s Halloween a little greener. October 31 is a day that traditionally sends shivers down your spine, but you can do your part to make sure the skeleton on your porch is doing the spooking, not refined sugars, vinyl costumes, and extreme energy usage. The scary flip side to All Hallow’s Eve is that this holiday is stooped in eco-unfriendly decorations, costumes, sweets, etc. Here are some steps you can take to make sure your Halloween stays green.
Are You Afraid of the Dark?
People tend to be more afraid of the dark, so why light up your home with neon or strobe lights? Using strands of LED lights and jack-o-lanterns to light the way to your porch reduces energy usage and makes for a scary sight. If you use candles, opt for the eco-friendly beeswax or soy variety.
Choosing a Sack for Your Loot
Make sure you give your kids bags that you already own like pillowcases or canvas tote bags. Pass on the pumpkin novelty trick or treat bags and if your kids choose to complain, simply show them how much candy will fit in one vs. the other!
The Last Minute Costume Hunt
Tired of showing up to the party and having someone show up looking exactly the same who happened to purchase their costume form the same neighborhood costume shop? It happens every year, so make sure this year things are different. Don’t invest in a store-bought costume with all that extra, unnecessary packaging. That way, you can avoid those scary chemicals (not the good kind of scary) like lead and vinyl.
