Al Gore Launches “We” Campaign
Al Gore Launches We Campaign
Al Gore has begun an immense PR campaign from his Alliance for Climate Protection (ACP) in an effort to call attention to the need to change policies regarding climate change. The “we” campaign is a three-year $300 million movement aimed at shifting public opinion over the urgency of global warming and the fact that “we” can overcome it.

How the “We” Campaign Will Work

The “we” campaign will feature television ads, print ads and social networks, utilizing 10 million volunteers to spread the good word. One of the objectives is to get rid of the partisanship question, showing ads that bring together opposing sides like Pat Robertson and Al Sharpton in unity over climate change. At least 20 percent of the “we” campaign budget will go towards social networking sites and individual alliances and non-profit community groups like the Scouts of America.

The ACP did some research and found that with less than 20 percent of the population ideologically opposed to climate change action, the rest are somewhere in between activist (about 10 percent), engaged (35 percent) and those who do not understand the issue of global warming or how to fix it. The goal is for 70 percent of the public to be fully involved with helping the problem and make it a top voting issue come election season.

Why the “We” Campaign?

Gore feels that U.S. politicians have been too hesitant on the issue of climate change, but that gaining public momentum can help change that. “The simple algorithm is this,” said Gore, “it’s important to change the light bulbs, but it’s much more important to change the laws.”

“The options available to civilization worldwide to avert this terribly destructive pattern are beginning to slip away from us,” said Gore. “The path for recovery runs right through Washington, D.C.”

Gore is using the profits from his Oscar-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth as well as his salary from Kleiner Perkin Caufield & Byers and the cash from numerous awards he has won toward the “we” campaign. Leftover funds will be provided by private donors.

Eventually, the focus of the campaign will turn to pushing legislation after creating awareness, such as boosting funding for renewable and a cap on carbon emissions, as well as impressing how there is great economic opportunity.
