Hunters Worry About Global Warming

By H. JOSEF HEBERT, Associated Press Writer

Global Warming Harming Fish and Game: Elk Hunting

From an article in the SF Gate / San Francisco Chronicle:

“Global warming could force elk and mule deer from much of the American West. Wild trout could disappear in lower Appalachian streams.

Two-thirds of the country’s ducks may disappear.

A new assessment of the threat to fish and wildlife habitat has hunters and anglers calling for action.

Groups representing nine major hunting and fishing organizations planned to meet Thursday with the House committee chairman who hopes to write legislation to curtail greenhouse gases linked to global warming.”

Thoughts on Global Warming and Hunting

The logic seems a bit contradictory — but hey. Like I’ve been saying to my friends and colleagues, if this is the way to get something massive done — if this is how it has to be, then so be it. I don’t think massive change occurs just because it’s mandatory or necessary or even because a threat is somehow imminent. And the reality is that for far too long, the urgency behind global warming has been sidelined and become the province of those on the far left — hippies or paranoid conservationalists — whatever they’ve been called. But they’ve been right all along, just marginalized.

So if the problems associated with global warming become personal for those NOT on the margins, then maybe something will happen. Cars don’t sell — more eco-friendly cars get created. Walmart finds an opening in the market with the green machine, and next thing you know, it’s in their commercials to sell consumers eco-friendly water bottles. It’s disconcerting if it’s just good old capitalism at work. But if it’s the beginning of developing a global discourse, and making others feel comfortable talking about the problems and just exactly what is at stake, then so be it.

Although I don’t hunt, I have friends who do and they tend to be the most aware nature lovers, even more-so than my friends who are hikers (myself included). Hunters often notice trends of fish decline, elk and deer changes, etc. Plus, hunters are a huge contingency in the US and with their support, think of all we could accomplish to sustain certain animal populations.
