The ReadyMade Magazine Challenge: Reusing What You Own
ReadyMade Magazine MacGyver Challenge
There is a good chance you have some old VHS tapes lying around the house (or even worse, Beta tapes). Or maybe your closet is full of ragged shirts or old packaging that you’ve been saving for sentimental reasons. Or perhaps you have used pens, broken computer equipment, outdated phone books and disposable lighters stockpiled in your basement. Whatever the case may be, ReadyMade Magazine has started challenging its readers to take their broken or used possessions and turn them into something new.

The New ReadyMade MacGyver Challenge

Using Richard Dean Anderson’s beloved television character MacGyver as their inspiration, the folks at the magazine are hosting a challenge in the secret agent’s honor. Known for his ability to create a nuclear bomb with a toothpick and a couple of rubber bands, MacGyver is plenty familiar with taking ordinary household objects and turning them into something new.

Each month, the magazine’s editors choose a new challenge using specific items, and readers are encouraged to send in their ingenious projects. The winning project is featured in the next issue along with DIY instructions. You get bragging rights, a free subscription and a ReadyMade T-shirt for your trouble. Even better, you just created some extra space in your closet and helped save your precious belonging from ending up in a landfill.

ReadyMade Asks, What’s Your Umbrella Done For You Lately?

The most recent issue of ReadyMade shows off the winners of the umbrella challenge, where two ladies from Wisconsin turned a broken umbrella into a pink magazine holder. Runner-ups include dog outfits, a portable drying rack and gym parachutes.
Past challenges include making new items out of old jeans, business cards, maps, plastic cups, strawberry baskets and bridesmaid’s dresses. Think you have what it takes? Check out the next challenge and find out more information by emailing them here: articles@readymademag.com.
